Bunyan Meeting House

At the Bunyan Meeting House

This week I went to lunch at Bunyan Meeting House in Mill Street in Bedford town centre. I enjoyed chatting to diners and lunch lived up to its reputation for quality, taste and value.

The Meeting House is a part of Bedford's history. The present church was built in 1849 on the site of the barn purchased in 1672 to be used as a church, of which John Bunyan was a member and minister. During John Bunyan's imprisonment - for preaching - between 1667-72 he wrote several works probably including much of the first part of The Pilgrim's Progress.

One of the 20th century stained glass windows in the church shows John Bunyan in prison, writing. It was made famous when a Bedford resident sent a postcard of the window to Terry Waite, the Archbishop of Canterbury's envoy, who was then being held in captivity in the Lebanon.
