Families across Bedford have been feeling the pinch and we need action to help now.
As Mayor, Dave has cut waste and kept council tax down; a below-inflation increase last year and a council tax cut this year have been achieved thanks to a ruthless approach to Council waste, and savings in areas such asback office costs and Council PR. Delivering good quality value for money services will always be Dave's top priority.
Dave has pursued a "Buy in Bedford" campaign to boost local shops and businesses. There is a lot we can do locally to help our local economy. Since Dave became Mayor the Council has held its first ever 'meet the buyer' event to give local suppliers the chance to meet major buyers, including the Council, and boost their chances of winning contracts with them. The Council's new Procurement Strategy has also, for the first time, outlined the assistance given to local businesses through a pack of information on how to compete for business with the council, a new initiative introduced under Dave's leadership.
Bedford's roads have been ignored for too long. As Mayor, Dave has pursued the fightback against years of chronic underfunding and neglect of our roads by the Tory County Council. Thanks to Dave and the Liberal Democrats, £4 million extra has been invested in road and pavement repairs and resurfacing over and above the previous level of funding under the Tories
Dave is taking real action to tackle congestion in and around town. He is delivering the final, missing link of the Western Bypass, having put the funding in place for this crucical project.
In his short time as Mayor, Dave has pursued a green agenda for the Council which includes real, pioneering action to protect the environment and save local taxpayers' money through lower energy bills. He also continues to fight the Conservatives' incinerator plans for Bedford. We should be recycling more not burning rubbish.
Dave is be a champion for our parks and open spaces. Bedford's wonderful parks and our beautiful riverside are being protected and enhanced, while 300 green spaces are set to be protected under new Council planning policies.
Local residents deserve the best quality local services. Dave is working to keep our streets safe for every resident and is tackling anti-social behaviour through improved, targeted CCTV and a range of diversionary activities for young people.
As Mayor, Dave is working to improve services for the most vulnerable. During Dave's period as Mayor to date, Adult Social Services have undergone a dramatic improvement after they were allowed to deteriorate to the point of emergency government intervention under the former Conservative County Council
While other authorities are taking an axe to services, Dave is ensuring that those in Bedford Borough are protected for the benefit of all parts of the community.
Education is the key to the future success of Bedford. Dave is an experienced school governor, and as Mayor he has made standards in education for local children a top priority. Standards have improved in the Borough's schools, with both the GCSE and A Level results in 2010 showing real progress compared to previous years.
Under Dave's leadership, the Council is investing in new classrooms and improved facilities in our local schools. Dave is also lobbying the Government for investment in the Borough's schools.
