Mayor Dave Hodgson has announced that works to demolish the existing Bedford bus station will begin later this month, with a brand new bus station to be constructed and opened by the end of the year.

The regeneration project for the Bedford bus station area under Mayor Dave is already well underway, with improvements including a new surface car park and new public toilets already completed. The refurbishment of the multi-storey car park is in progress, and additional improvement works in the area will include new shop fronts, environmental improvements and new paving.

The central feature of the project will be the new bus station itself, however. The current bus station has been widely recognised as being in need of redevelopment for many years. After false dawns in the past over potential regeneration, even during the so-called 'boom years', Mayor Dave has overcome the obstacles in the way of this crucial developoment for Bedford and is making it happen in 2014.

Commenting, Mayor Dave Hodgson said: "Bedford bus station has let our town centre down for far too long and we are pleased to be making this regeneration project happen. The construction of the new bus station itself is the central feature of this scheme which will create a gateway to the town centre we can be proud of.

"We all know that a new bus station for Bedford cannot come a moment too soon, and we have worked to get the funds in place and bring the probject to this point, with works on the bus station itself now getting underway. The completed scheme will bring a range of benefits for both bus users and all visitors to Bedford town centre, including the brand new bus station building, new shopfronts, the refurbished multi storey car park as well as the already completed surface car park at Greyfriars and new public toilets."
