Remembrance events and activities are already underway across Bedford Borough, and on Sunday Mayor Dave Hodgson attended the Scots Society's Remembrance Service at Foster Hill Road. The service was a remembrance for all service personnel who have lost their lives in the armed forces, and it commemorates the large number of members of the Highland regiments who were stationed in Bedford prior to heading to the Front in the First World War, and who sadly lost their lives in large numbers due to infection and illness.
Commenting on Facebook prior to the event on Sunday, Mayor Dave Hodgson wrote: "At Foster Hill Road Cemetery on Sunday I will be attending the Scots Society's Remembrance Service. This is a remembrance for all service personnel, and in particular it commemorates the young men of the Highland regiments who died in Bedford whilst under training prior to departure for the Front, due to illness including a measles outbreak.'
"Pipers will be present, together with representatives of the Services, for what is always a poignant service which pays tribute to lost service personnel and commemorates an important and deeply sad episode in Bedford's history"
