Freeze Fares Campaign Update - House of Commons Select Committee Calls for Commuter Freeze

December 6, 2018 12:12 PM

Liberal Democrat Campaigners Launch the Freeze Fares Campaign at Bedford StationIn a scathing report on the notorious May 2018 rail timetable changes which caused huge disruption to Bedford services, the House of Commons Transport Select Committee has called for commuters' to have their 2019 season tickets frozen at 2018 prices.

Mayor Dave Hodgson, who is campaigning for the Government to freeze fares for Bedford rail users due to the particular, ongoing upheaval they are suffering, welcomed the report, saying:

"The details about the impact of this shambles are nothing local rail users didn't know, and this comes days after the announcement of yet another big fare rise. The report is right to back a fares freeze for commuters and I repeat my call for the government to freeze fares and stop taking the rail users of Bedford for granted. The government oversaw an utter mess which caused people massive disruption in their personal and work lives, and they're still suffering its effects on a daily basis."

The Cross-Party Committee Report also highlights the Government's culpability for the rail chaos in May 2018 and afterwards, stating that the it is 'not reasonable for the Secretary of State to absolve himself of all responsibility.'
