Council Converts Vacant Buildings to Temporary Accommodation for Homeless People

March 24, 2019 9:10 AM

Mayor Dave Hodgson by the River in BedfordMore temporary accommodation is being provided for homeless people in Bedford Borough.

Bedford Borough Council has converted a number of vacant properties into temporary accommodation for those who are homeless. Five properties have already been refurbished providing up to 17 bedrooms, with the first families moving in last month. More properties are expected to follow later in Spring this year.

These additional units of temporary accommodation will join a range of other accommodation and services which the Council provides for those who are homeless, or at risk of homelessness.

Commenting, Mayor Dave Hodgson said: "There has been a huge increase nationally in the need for temporary accommodation. By converting these vacant properties, we are bringing empty homes back into use and helping to ensure we are able to provide temporary accommodation to those who are homeless and at risk of homelessness."
