April 22, 2019 2:30 PM

Mayor Dave Hodgson and Cllr Wendy Rider on Manton Lane, BedfordCongestion-busting improvement works on Manton Lane begin this week. The works are part of Mayor Dave's Transporting Bedford 2020 scheme targeting congestion hotspots across Bedford, and will involve widening the road to provide additional capacity, new lights at the junction with Bedford Modern school and improvements to existing traffic signals.

The works commence on Tuesday 23rd April and are scheduled to be completed by late autumn. Work during term time is restricted to between 9.30am-3.30pm and extended during school holidays to 8am-6pm.

Specific measures taking place under these works are:

  • Make improvements to the operation of the existing traffic signals at the junction of Brickhill Drive/Manton Lane
  • Install three-way traffic lights at the junction with Bedford Modern School
  • Widen the road to ease the flow of traffic on Manton Lane

Further works to install a footbridge over Manton Lane, and wider improvement works around the Manton Lane/Clapham Road and Paula Radcliffe Way/Great Ouse Way roundabouts will follow at a later date.

Commenting, Mayor Dave said: "Transporting Bedford 2020 is about taking effective congestion-busting measures at some of the busiest junctions across the town. These works will make a real, positive difference to people's everyday experience and get traffic moving at peak times."

The works under Transporting Bedford 2020 follow an in-depth study of the way traffic moves in and around the town in order to improve the situation for all road users. Future schemes include those at Ampthill Road, Britannia Road, Bromham Road and the High Street, and you can find out more about the overall programme at www.bedford.gov.uk/transportingbedford2020
