Fuel Poverty Awareness Day

November 29, 2019 12:30 PM

Fuel Poverty Awareness Day 2019Today is Fuel Poverty Awareness Day, the national day to raise awareness of the issue of fuel poverty and the solutions available.

Fuel Poverty Awareness Day is coordinated by fuel poverty charity National Energy Action and is the national day to raise awareness of some of the issues faced by those living in cold homes and the solutions available.

Around four million households in the UK are in fuel poverty, unable to afford the energy they need to stay warm and safe at home. Earlier this week, the ONS released figures highlighting that 23,200 people extra people in England and Wales died in winter 2018-19 compared to the rest of the year, and of these 30% are estimated to be because of cold homes. The figures, while shocking, are also just the tip of the iceberg, with many others suffering from poor physical and mental health and the resulting impact on health services costing the NHS between £1.4 and £2bn every year in England alone.
